A noticeable reminder of your smoking days or of a party gone wrong, a cigarette burn on your carpet is hardly a memento worth keeping. Although removing a particularly large burn may require the expert assistance of professional carpet cleaners, repairing smaller cigarette burns is a task you can easily tackle with the help of a few household items.
Remove the Burnt Fibers
First, you should remove the burnt fibers on your carpet. Using a small pair of scissors, cut out the scorched fibers. Next, it is time to thoroughly clean the burnt area: just spray water onto the damaged carpet section and scrub it forcefully with a cloth or sponge.
After spraying water once more, proceed to dry the area by blotting it with a paper towel or clean cloth. Make sure the tarnished area is completely dry.
DIY Patching
If the now clean and dry carpet hole is small and inconspicuous, you may opt to leave it as it is, and it will hopefully no longer be an eye sore. However, if the hole cannot be ignored, some patching work is required next.
With the help of your scissors, remove fibers from unnoticeable carpet areas beneath furniture or behind closets. Once this is accomplished, apply strong carpet glue to the hole, and carefully place the new fibers inside it.
Allow the glue to dry for several hours, making sure children and pets keep away from the carpet. You may wish to cover the repaired area with paper and a heavy book. Once the glue has dried, gently comb the carpet to ensure the newly placed fibers do not stand out. Tread gently on the repaired carpet section, and practice extra caution when vacuuming it.
If you are not sure about the details involved in the carpet repair process, or if there are, sadly, multiple cigarette burns on your carpet, it would be a good idea to consult with experienced carpet cleaners. With their expertise and professional help, your carpet will look as good as new.
