Carpet Cleaning Tips for Pet Owners

NYCleaners

Regardless of how much you may love your dogs or cats, it’s no secret that these companion animals can sometimes make a hash of your carpeting. Because of the damage that pets can sometimes do to carpets, some people will either forego carpeting altogether, or just buy cheap carpets that can be easily replaced. However, keeping your carpets clean even if you own several pets is not an impossible task, especially if you choose a carpet made of fibers that are easy to clean.

Are You a Pet Owner? Choose Your Carpet Carefully

Our dogs and cats don’t mean to cause harm to carpets, but it’s undeniable that they can inadvertently. Pets have no concept of the value of a carpet and can cause problems simply by being pets:

Vomit is a real problem with both cats and dogs. In many cases, the animal has absolutely no warning and just vomits.
An excited puppy or dog will often urinate on a carpet, and a sick animal can deposit diarrhea.
The paws of dogs, especially, can track in considerable amounts of dirt.
Many dogs have oily coats that can dull and soil carpeting, and cause unpleasant odors.

Natural fiber carpets, made of wool, silk, or jute are going to be more difficult to clean than will those made of nylon. The reason is that natural fibers are more likely to absorb unwanted ‘deposits’, while nylon will resist absorbing pet stains.

Remove Pet Stains

Fortunately, you don’t have to live with a dirty, odorous carpet if you have pets, but understanding how to clean up urine, feces, or vomit will make a big difference in how successful you are. To remove pet stains from carpets, there are some easy steps to follow:

Remove the offensive substance as quickly as possible – the longer it remains in place, the more difficult it will be to remove. Mop up urine and pick up feces and vomit before they dry.
Wash the area completely with warm soap and water.
Use an enzyme based product to break down the organic proteins. This will make it less likely that the pet will use the spot again for elimination.
Do not use an ammonia based cleaner; this will only make the smell stronger.

Choose a carpet made with fibers that are easier to clean if you have pets, and always remember to clean up their accidents immediately.
